Hong Kong Krazies: Trash Cans

One thing we LOVE about this city is how clean it is. I've never seen such a large city stay so clean. There is a whole army of people (mostly older women and men) who sweep all the sidewalks and clean up the leaves and trash daily. (everywhere!!!) Its impressive...Another thing... there are trash cans everywhere!!! Literally... you can be hiking, miles from anywhere and see a real trash can... I always wonder who comes and gets that trash? It really does keep the city clean though, there is no sense is throwing trash on the ground when you can walk ten steps and put it in a can. Here is a picture I snapped the other day in front of our place....
I added the arrows, but you can see that from where I was standing I could see FOUR trash cans... yikes!

Disney {Hong Kong Style}

When Grandma and Grandpa were here last week, we got to go to Hong Kong Disney Land. The best part was we were able to take our friends Josiah and Annette with us and their mom watched little Qun Qun...

Mid-Autumn Festival

Its a four day weekend here... Mid-Autumn Festival is today and tomorrow it Chinese National Day... Mid-Autumn is a lunar holiday and National Day is always Oct. 1st, so they aren't always at the same time. We are enjoying the break from school and the time to spend as a family. Last night we went a lantern festival in a nearby park with our friends. So fun!
 We bought plane and car lanterns for the boys... they had a blast taking them around.

Max kept saying, " I want it, I want it..." about the big colorful animal lanterns :o)

And no Mid-Autumn would be complete without a moon cake. This was actually a good one, green tea flavored. You can read last years post about moon cakes here.

The decorations are always so nice from this time of year... lanterns everywhere...

Hong Kong Krazies: Wet Market Mania

 In Hong Kong we have grocery stores. They are pretty normal looking (smaller isles, selection, and more asian goods), but still "normal" food shopping. Then there are the markets...almost every area of town has their own wet market... I'm not sure about the name, but I think it comes from the fact that the whole place gets hosed down every night. They are inside markets where you can by everything (usually including the kitchen sink!) :o) The main products are food... fruit, veg, and meat. But there are other random shops selling other random goods... shoes towels, a key maker, flowers, etc.
I have yet to purchase meat from a stall like one of these... but it makes for some good pictures. I do buy lots of fruit and veggies from the markets becuase the selection and price are quite good compared to the store.

Hong Kong Krazies: McDonald's Delivery?

 YES! McD's delivers! In a city with no drive-thrus. You can order McDonalds from the comfort of your own home. We have never done this as we have one with in walking distance, but I have been tempted to order in a Saturday breakfast :o) Oh, and they deliver 24 hours a day... so when the craving hits...
 KFC and Pizza Hut will also deliver by motor scooter, of course! I took all three of these pictures right out side our estate.
 Other fun Mc'ds facts...
every few months they sell these special cards. For about $1.50 US, you can use it for about 2 months. Each time I use it I get to buy something from the top zone (on my card) and then I get something free from the bottom zone. SO... I get an iced coffee and Jack and Max can share a large OJ for the cost of my coffee. Its a good deal for us all!
 Also, they love to have special meals every so often. Bryan talks fondly of the green curry burger posters that used to look like a snot burger :o) I took this German Themed sandwich poster last time we were there.  I can't remember the last time we actually ate a meal at McDonalds, but its a great cheap place to get coffees and ice cream when the time is right!
